SUMMARY:Master of Landscape Architecture Info Session
DESCRIPTION:\nLearn about the Spitzer School's Master of Landscape Architec
ture I program\, an accredited professional degree program that is open to
students from all undergraduate backgrounds. This session will include a
program overview by Professor Catherine Seavitt Nordenson\, a discussion w
ith current students and faculty as well as recent graduates of the MLA pr
ogram\, and Q&amp\;A. Confirmed speakers: Andrea Johnson '15\, Craig Shaw
'18\, Rujuta Naringrekar '20\, Kayla Conroy '21\, and Abby Stein '22.\nLan
dscape architecture plays an essential role in connecting justice to envir
onmental design and the planning of landscape systems in the urban realm.
The Graduate Program in Landscape Architecture at the Spitzer School of Ar
chitecture\, City College of New York\, prepares students to be leaders in
the field of landscape architecture through innovative research and pract
ice in urban ecological design\, planning\, and policymaking. The program
aims to reimagine and rethink the profession’s current and future challe
nges through the lens of environmental justice\, including globalization\,
availability of natural resources\, land management\, and the climate eme
rgency. The curriculum engages critical thinking about complex and indeter
minate systems\, empowering students to work across multiple scales of the
urban landscape.\nLandscape architecture is a discipline that actually wo
rks with the surface of the earth -- it literally changes the world and th
e world’s systemic flows. Our program attracts activist students who see
k to rethink accepted paradigms and implement actionable change in the pub
lic realm and the quality of public space in terms of equity\, accessibili
ty\, and justice -- climate justice\, social justice\, environmental justi
ce\, and multispecies justice. Transforming the profession begins in the a
cademy. Our landscape architecture program is committed to challenging the
entrenched biases and historical canons of landscape architecture that ha
ve too long been accepted as the norm\, and we support the clarity and res
onance of our students’ diverse voices in the field.\n
