SUMMARY:Master of Landscape Architecture Info Session
DESCRIPTION:\n\nLearn about the Spitzer School's Master of Landscape Archit
ecture program\, an accredited professional degree program that is open to
students from all undergraduate backgrounds. This session will include a
welcome by Interim Dean Marta Gutman\, a program overview by Professor Cat
herine Seavitt Nordenson\, a discussion with current students and faculty
as well as recent graduates of the MLA program\, and Q&amp\;A.\n\nLandscap
e architecture plays an essential role in connecting justice to environmen
tal design and the planning of landscape systems in the urban realm. The G
raduate Program in Landscape Architecture at the Spitzer School of Archite
cture\, City College of New York\, prepares students to be leaders in the
field of landscape architecture through innovative research and practice i
n urban ecological design\, planning\, and policymaking. The program aims
to reimagine and rethink the profession’s current and future challenges
through the lens of environmental justice\, including globalization\, avai
lability of natural resources\, land management\, and the climate emergenc
 y. The curriculum engages critical thinking about complex and indeterminat
e systems\, empowering students to work across multiple scales of the urba
n landscape.\n\nLandscape architecture is a discipline that actually works
with the surface of the earth -- it literally changes the world and the w
orld’s systemic flows. Our program attracts activist students who seek t
o rethink accepted paradigms and implement actionable change in the public
realm and the quality of public space in terms of equity\, accessibility\
 , and justice -- climate justice\, social justice\, environmental justice\
, and multispecies justice. Transforming the profession begins in the acad
emy. Our landscape architecture program is committed to challenging the en
trenched biases and historical canons of landscape architecture that have
too long been accepted as the norm\, and we support the clarity and resona
nce of our students’ diverse voices in the field.\n\nSpitzer School grad
programs share a teaching\, research\, and design environment known as th
e unit system. Within year-long\, team-taught\, vertically integrated desi
gn units\, students and professors work together to define questions and p
ropose design solutions. Just like in the professions\, students synthesiz
e diverse skills and subject areas into their projects. Check out this yea
r’s design units.\n\nOur next deadline is in January 2022 to begin studi
es in Fall 2022. Please see instructions on our Graduate Application Instr
 uctions page.
