SUMMARY:Master of Urban Planning in Urban Design Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the Spitzer School's post-professional program for
students with architecture or landscape architecture backgrounds: Urban D
esign (Master of Urban Planning aka MUPUD). Speakers include Dean Marta Gu
tman\, Program Director + Professor Julio Salcedo-Fernandez\, and Director
of Graduate Affairs Hannah Borgeson.\n\nThis is a virtual event\, taking
place on Zoom. \n\n\nThe Urban Design program is centered on participator
y urbanism\, the premise that only a combination of leadership\, technical
\, and design skills will lead to meaningful change in the way we think\,
plan\, and construct our built environments. Building on the leadership of
the late Michael Sorkin\, the program is specifically designed to foster
new conversations in response to our urbanized planetary crises and provid
e transformative alternatives that radically reimagine our cities as equit
 able\, diverse\, resourceful\, and ecologically nimble.\n\n\nCurriculum\n\
nMUPUD fuses research\, design\, advocacy\, and leadership in unique and t
rans-disciplinary ways. Students and professors work together to define qu
estions\, propose solutions\, and disseminate their findings by bringing t
ogether technology\, practice\, and activism in different strengths and sc
ales across the program’s year-long “design think tanks.” We have de
ep links and interests in both the Global North and Global South\, as well
as across the emerging economies of the East. The spring studio typically
includes a study trip to a far-flung urban site to both learn from and ta
ckle challenges in a different context.\n\n Total program credits: 45\n
 Per-semester courseload: 15 credits (4 classes)\n\nThe program is designed
to be completed in three full-time\, sequential semesters (fall\, spring\
, fall). For students who desire a longer course of study\, it is possible
to distribute the credits over up to two academic years/four semesters.\n
\nAdmissions\n\nOur next priority deadline is in January 2027 to begin stu
dies in Fall 2027. Please see the instructions on our Graduate Application
Instructions page. Applicants to the Urban Design program should hold a
professional degree in either architecture or landscape architecture. Appl
icants from other backgrounds will be considered only in exceptional circu
mstances and on demonstration of a high level of design ability.\n\nSTEM D
esignation\n\nThis MUP in Urban Design program is listed within the U.S. g
overnment’s official STEM fields list\, meaning graduates with F-1 visas
may be eligible for U.S. work authorization for up to three years. See th
e STEM OPT Hub for more information.
