SUMMARY:Master of Urban Planning in Urban Design Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the Spitzer School's post-professional program for
students with architecture or landscape architecture backgrounds: Urban D
esign (Master of Urban Planning aka MUPUD). Speakers include Dean Marta Gu
tman\, Program Director + Professor Julio Salcedo-Fernandez\, and Director
of Graduate Affairs Hannah Borgeson.\n\nThis is a virtual event\, taking
place on Zoom. Registration will be available in the fall.\n\n\nThe Urban
Design program is centered on participatory urbanism\, the premise that o
nly a combination of leadership\, technical\, and design skills will lead
to meaningful change in the way we think\, plan\, and construct our built
environments. Building on the leadership of the late Michael Sorkin\, the
program is specifically designed to foster new conversations in response t
o our urbanized planetary crises and provide transformative alternatives t
hat radically reimagine our cities as equitable\, diverse\, resourceful\,
 and ecologically nimble.\n\n\nCurriculum\n\nMUPUD fuses research\, design\
, advocacy\, and leadership in unique and trans-disciplinary ways. Student
s and professors work together to define questions\, propose solutions\, a
nd disseminate their findings by bringing together technology\, practice\,
and activism in different strengths and scales across the program’s yea
r-long “design think tanks.” We have deep links and interests in both
the Global North and Global South\, as well as across the emerging economi
es of the East. The spring studio typically includes a study trip to a far
-flung urban site to both learn from and tackle challenges in a different
 context.\n\n Total program credits: 45\n Per-semester courseload: 15 cre
dits (4 classes)\n\nThe program is designed to be completed in three full-
time\, sequential semesters (fall\, spring\, fall). For students who desir
e a longer course of study\, it is possible to distribute the credits over
up to two academic years/four semesters.\n\nAdmissions\n\nOur next priori
ty deadline is in January 2027 to begin studies in Fall 2027. Please see t
he instructions on our Graduate Application Instructions page. Applicants
to the Urban Design program should hold a professional degree in either a
rchitecture or landscape architecture. Applicants from other backgrounds w
ill be considered only in exceptional circumstances and on demonstration o
f a high level of design ability.\n\nSTEM Designation\n\nThis MUP in Urban
Design program is listed within the U.S. government’s official STEM fie
lds list\, meaning graduates with F-1 visas may be eligible for U.S. work
authorization for up to three years. See the STEM OPT Hub for more infor
 mation.
