SUMMARY:Open House New York 2017: Solar RoofPod & Harlem Garden for Urban F
 ood
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to all in conjunction with Open House New York\n\
nVisit the rooftop of the Spitzer School of Architecture (Vinõly Architec
ts) to see its Solar Roofpod and urban farm. This student-designed 800 s.
 f. micro-dwelling is surrounded by a garden and apiary that provide Harle
m residents and students with experience raising agricultural crops and
keeping bees.\n\nThe Solar Roofpod is a plus-net-energy dwelling designed
to provide local green energy for urban buildings. The prototype was desi
gned and built by students under the supervision of Prof. Christian Volkm
ann at City College for the Department of Energy’s 2011 Solar Decathlon
. It returned to CCNY in 2014 to serve as a living classroom and a hub fo
r sustainable design.\n\nWith its 10 kWp of electricity and 12 kWp of addi
tional thermal energy production\, the Roofpod provides surplus to its ho
st building and can serve as a resilient back-up system in case of grid o
utages. The modular building allows elements to be freely combined. The b
uilding envelope\, the surrounding green roof system\, and the “solar t
rellis” comprise the structure.\n\nThe adjoining Harlem Rooftop Garden
provides the vital link among STEM studies\, our local food system\, and h
ealth. The Spitzer School together with the on-campus High School for Mat
h\, Science and Engineering created this urban farm and offer joint inter
disciplinary programs for high school and college students. The farm cont
ains plants in containers with an irrigation system built on steel beams
as well as two bee hives.\n\nA few blocks farther north within architect G
 eorge B. Post's landmarked Neo-Gothic campus\, Shepard Hall's historic Gr
eat Hall will also be open 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Step inside this soaring
jewel--one of the largest rooms in all of New York City--and learn about
its history and architecture--from the chief architect guiding its rest
 oration\, Carl Stein. Tours at 10:00\, 11:00\, 12:00\, and 1:00.
