Many successful companies – Apple, Microsoft, Twitter – were founded by partners with outstandingly productive relationships. In this wide-ranging talk to close the SCIAME Spring 2020 Lecture Series, Dean Lokko asks engineer and professor Hanif Kara and London-based architect Simon Allford about their decades-long working relationship, which is also the story of an unusual partnership between an architect and an engineer. Allford (AHMM London) works in the UK and internationally, engaging public and private clients in the exploration of architecture’s potential to offer delight as well as utility. He is chair of the Architecture Foundation, a trustee of the Architecture Association Foundation, and a visiting professor at the Bartlett and GSD Harvard. He has previously been vice president for education at the RIBA and a chair of design review at CABE, and he is a judge for the RIBA Awards. Allford engages in the broader architectural discussion as a writer, critic, teacher, judge of competitions, frequent lecturer, examiner, advisor, and commentator. Professor Kara is a practicing structural engineer and professor in practice of architectural technology at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard. His work is recognized as being linked with the research and education areas of design. He co-tutored a diploma unit at the Architecture Association, London, from 2000 to 2004 and was visiting professor of architectural technology at KTH Stockholm from 2007 to 2012. Kara’s particular design-led approach and interest in innovative form, material uses, and complex analysis methods have allowed him to work on numerous award-winning and pioneering projects.
