The Chair’s office at Spitzer is pleased to invite all students, faculty, and staff to the Architecture Department Lunchtime Lecture featuring Adjunct Associate Professor Vyjayanthi Rao. This event will be co-sponsored by the Future Architects of the Middle East (FAME). Please join us in rm. 107.
Vyjayanthi V. Rao is an anthropologist, writer and curator, currently teaching at Spitzer School of Architecture and at the Yale School of Architecture. Focusing on memory, heritage and the built environment, her work explores the intersections of violence, uncertainty and speculation as situated processes through scholarly writing and artistic collaborations based on fieldwork in India and the United States. Her research draws on sound, image, mapping and experimental forms of writing.
She is the author of Ruins and Recollections: On the Subjects of Displacement (PhD dissertation, University of Chicago, 2002) and the Editor of Speculation Now: Essays and Artworks (Duke University Press, 2015), Occupy All Streets: Olympic Urbanism in Rio de Janeiro (UR Books, 2016) and Urbanism Beyond the City (Special Issue of Public Culture, 2023). She is the recipient of numerous grants from the Graham Foundation, Ford Foundation, the American Institute of Indian Studies and other organizations, in recognition of her work. In 2022, Rao co-curated the exhibition Multiplicity for the sixth editor of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale.
