Student work from the CetraRuddy Design Studio in Housing continues to garner public attention. In May, the Urban Omnibus Intersections series published “House Proud” by M Arch students David Clark Smith and Isaac Telio-Bejar. Their article focuses on two new residential projects — one in Brooklyn, one in Los Angeles — that use design to address the need for housing and other issues faced by marginalized groups such as LGBTQ+ senior citizens. The publication was commissioned following the Fall 2017 studio final review by a guest who was impressed with Smith’s project, together with fellow second-year student Rashidah Sherman Green in June Williamson’s studio, for LGBTQ+ senior housing on Staten Island.

In June, Mary Gilmartin and Avi Nagel from the same studio received the Society of American Registered Architects NY Student Design Award of Excellence for their project Stapleton Baugruppen. Their project used the philosophy of the baugruppen (building groups), which promotes shared amenities and co-living as well as ownership and equity, to guide high-quality design for the dense urban environment.

The CetraRuddy Design Studio in Housing is running for the third time in fall 2018, giving second-year M Arch I students the opportunity to explore the possibilities of housing design. Previously taught by Professors Fabian Llonch and June Williamson, and now led by Professors Martin Stigsgaard and Loukia Tsafoulia, the studio is generously sponsored by John Cetra and Nancy Ruddy of the firm CetraRuddy Architecture.
