Prof. Williamson’s Retrofitting Suburbia in Australia
Suburban Futures’s 2022 international conference in Brisbane was centered around “Retrofitting Suburbia,” Professor June Williamson’s eponymous work together with Ellen Dunham-Jones.
Williamson’s keynote at the event on October 5, 2022, set the stage for the conference by emphasizing how an expansion of forward-thinking urban design approaches to the sprawl outside of cities, while often overlooked, is vital to the success of both the urban core and the suburbs that continue to grow around them. She notes in particular the redevelopment of underutilized vehicular infrastructure, “grayfield,” as key to improving climate-resilience and reactivating street life.
