Please join us in the first-floor corridor gallery for the Generative Histories Harlem exhibition. It celebrates themes, student work, research, and pedagogical principles of the Harlem Place, Memory, & Culture Incubator (PMCI) at the Spitzer School of Architecture. Supported by the Mellon Foundation, the PMCI launched in Fall 2023 with the aim to engage culture, history, aesthetics, imagination, and place in Harlem and develop and celebrate interdisciplinary stakeholder collaboration. The goal is to bring ever-expanding and emerging notions of preservation to bear on architecture and marshal them as a generative endeavor in the teaching and practice of design and the built environment.
Generative Histories Harlem, designed by Prof. Jerome Haferd, was built and installed by Spitzer students on the first floor of the architecture school. It showcases student work from PMCI-affiliated design studios and seminars. Woven throughout the exhibit are documents, clips, and other ephemera that index the collaborative relationship with a growing ecosystem of Harlem community partners and interlocutors.
The February 18th opening is timed to honor Black History Month at the Spitzer School of Architecture.
Gallery hours are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; please bring a government-issued or CUNY ID.
