First Year Student Work Honored in “Recipe for a Room” AIA Design Competition
Cristina Stivala, a first-year B Arch student at Spitzer, placed runner-up in this year’s AIA Design Competition “Recipe for a Room.“
The challenge was to create a classroom model entirely out of school supplies while focusing on the impact COVID-19 has had on these places of learning. Cristina’s approach was to implement an engaging, outdoor classroom, reinventing the restrictive nature of the typical learning space. Her energy and enthusiasm toward the project was well-received across the esteemed jury.
“I see so much potential. Your placement in the landscape, your creating of a frame, your integrating of the landscape into that frame. . . . I really love this project.”
–Kai-Uwe Bergmann, FAIA, Partner, BIG | Bjarke Ingels Group
“I always wonder how we can integrate gardens into our projects, and the arrangement that you have, a sort of semi circular space, is really a wonderful idea for doing that, and a focal point.”
