Spitzer Fellowships 2022-23

The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture is launching a new fellowship program that invites and supports up-and-coming designers, practitioners, planners, spatial activists, advocates, historians, and other academics outside the CUNY system in their research in architecture, landscape architecture, sustainability, or urban design. Applications in all areas of architectural research, design, technology, digital techniques, computation, history, theory, and pedagogy are welcome, with the goal of making the Spitzer School a hub of innovation that advances racial and gender justice, supports new and emerging voices, and is welcome to promising practitioners and academics from historically under-represented groups.

Two Spitzer Fellows, each supported by a stipend of $60,000, are expected to be in residency at the Spitzer School for the academic year, and to participate in the Spitzer School’s rich culture by giving a public lecture each semester, participating in reviews, and in other ways sharing the Fellow’s research findings with the Spitzer community. The Spitzer School will provide an office and credentials that give access to libraries and archives at CCNY and across the CUNY system. No teaching is permitted during the fellowship period. Health insurance, and supplemental funds, up to $10,000, are available, to purchase materials, organize a symposium, and so forth.

The Spitzer School of Architecture is committed to social and sustainable concerns in practice, as well as to providing access to the finest education in the art, history, and technology of architecture, urban design, and landscape architecture to the broadest and most diverse student population. A prospective Spitzer Fellow should be prepared to participate and contribute to this lively intellectual atmosphere, and join the Spitzer School in its commitment in furthering justice, diversity, inclusion, gender equity, and anti-racism within the academy and the design professions.

To apply, send a cover letter, a research proposal (2,000-5,000 words, 10 images maximum, bibliography), c.v., and two letters of reference to ssadean@ccny.cuny.edu by April 25, 2022. Please include the phrase “Spitzer Fellowship Application” in your email subject line.

All applications will be reviewed by the Spitzer School’s Awards and Fellowships Committee, which will make its recommendations to the dean of the school. Fellows will be notified by June 15, 2022. Two fellowships are on offer for 2022-23.

The Spitzer fellowships are intended for candidates without current CUNY affiliation. CUNY alumni are welcome.

This program is supported by the Spitzer Architecture Fund
