Prof. Bagchee Speaks on Building Community at Architectural League
Professor Nandini Bagchee‘s practice was featured as part of the Architectural League’s lecture series “Current Work.” The event, recorded on November 15, 2022,
highlighted the development of community spaces around the city and the bottom-up design process critical to their success.
Professor Bagchee presented two projects. The first was born out of a collaboration between the Spitzer School and South Bronx Unite, starting in 2016, and envisions a community center in the place of a shuttered rehabilitation clinic in Mott Haven. The second is a recently-completed community space in a former storefront in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, which serves local artists through a flexible program.
Professor Bagchee’s practice addresses the design professional’s historical role in demographic marginalization and exploitation by engaging directly with organizations like South Bronx Unite and the Laundromat Project to forge spaces that can present an alternative model.
