Student Project Wins 2017 ASLA Honor Award

Christine Facella MLA ’17 is a winner of a 2017 American Society of Landscape Architects Student Honor Award for her project “Forests on the Edge: Plant-Based Economies Driving Ecological Renewal in Haiti.” Using Haiti as a prototypical case-study, the project investigates the utilization of live fences as a catalyst for reforestation through the choreographed design of economically and environmentally beneficial linear forests.

Recognizing the project in the Analysis and Planning category, the jury commended the work: “Timely, useful, highly implementable. You could take this to any number of organizations tomorrow and come away with a plan.”

Professors Catherine Seavitt Nordenson and Matthew Seibert served as faculty advisors.

Facella’s was one of 28 student project awards selected from 295 entries from 52 schools, representing the top work of landscape architecture students in the U.S. and around the world. Award recipients receive featured coverage in Landscape Architecture Magazine‘s September issue and will be honored during the ASLA Annual Meeting and EXPO in Los Angeles in October.
